“When things break, it’s not the actual breaking that prevents them from getting back together again. It’s because a little piece gets lost - the two remaining ends couldn’t fit together even if they wanted to. The whole shape has changed.”

I used to feel like I was winning this disgraceful race that once felt like a game. A trophy wife of sorts, and you—the beautiful losing kind. Night after night I gripped my victory tightly in my arms and wished you away like some disease I couldn’t shake. Imitating your strategy and lacing it with my own, it was my perfect make-believe home. I pitied the east-coast because I knew you were alone. Documenting each mile-marker with delicate little bows that decorated my throne. Every empire has it’s demise, and I can surely feel mine. Your smiles burning like wildfire from coast-to-coast, your new-found happiness haunting me like a ghost.
